Riverside
1974
Model. Granite and core-ten steel. 4´x 4´x 76´
Chosen as the sole winner in a nationwide competition sponsored by the Hudson River Museum for sculpture to be installed in Columbus Park, Yonkers, N.Y.
Five 4´x 4´x 4´ Cor-ten steel volumes, the lower parts of which cut with chisel-like form into a granite mica schist outcropping, are installed level with each other, four-foot apart, each anchored to 76´ of 1" diameter stainless steel cable held in tension from end to end, which passes through a cut in the top surfaces and aligns parallel with the river far below. Perpendicular to the cable, cuts into the stone accommodate the chisel forms, leveling the tops thereby providing stability on both axes.
Looking down from this site in a park high above the downtown section of the old riverside city of Yonkers, N.Y. one may conjure images of pilings being driven in the early construction of this port. This piece may allude to that time inviting a smell of the sea and small boats.
Local politics forbade installation.
